أَطِيعُوا ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا ٱلرَّسُولَ
“Obey Allah and obey the Messenger.”
Qur’an 4:59 · The Clear Quran ↗
First, an essential distinction

The Qur’an and authentic Sunnah are not competing sources of guidance.

The Qur’an is the revealed word of Allah. Authentic Hadith are reliably transmitted reports preserving the sayings, actions, approvals, teachings, and example of His Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ. Some narrations preserve the Prophet’s exact wording, while others faithfully convey his meaning.

Muslim scholars developed rigorous methods to investigate these reports and distinguish authentic teachings from unreliable or fabricated narrations. The Sunnah—the Prophet’s established teachings and example—is not separate from the obligation to obey Allah. Following the Messenger ﷺ is itself part of obedience to Allah.

The same verse that commands obedience to Allah and His Messenger instructs believers to refer their disagreements to them.

Questioning whether a particular Hadith is authentic is not the same as rejecting the authority of the Messenger ﷺ. But dismissing every Hadith without examining its evidence risks rejecting teachings he genuinely delivered.

Consider what is at stake.

The cost of rejecting authentic Hadith
01

Your faith itself

Rejecting the established authority of the Messenger ﷺ is a matter of the utmost seriousness.

Allah declares that true faith requires accepting the Prophet’s judgments, finding no inward resistance to them, and submitting wholeheartedly. Qur’an 4:65 ↗

Mainstream Sunni scholarship recognizes that categorical denial of the binding authority of the established Sunnah, or knowingly rejecting definitively established Prophetic teachings, can constitute kufr (disbelief).

However, questioning the authenticity or interpretation of an individual narration is not automatically disbelief. Applying a judgment of disbelief to a particular person requires careful consideration by qualified scholars of the evidence, the person’s knowledge, understanding, and any circumstances that may prevent such a ruling.

The warning concerns the rejection of what the Messenger ﷺ truly taught, not sincere efforts to distinguish authentic reports from unreliable ones.

02

The warnings about the Dajjal

You risk dismissing warnings about one of the greatest trials humanity will ever face.

The Prophet ﷺ warned about the Dajjal (the False Messiah), described aspects of his deception, and taught believers how to seek protection from his trial. He also explained that earlier prophets warned their communities about the Dajjal.

These warnings are preserved in authentic narrations. Without them, you risk remaining unaware of important details that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ deliberately taught his community.

03

The signs of the Last Hour

You risk losing important details about what the Prophet ﷺ foretold concerning the approach of the Last Hour.

His authentic teachings describe major signs, including:

  • The emergence of the Dajjal (the False Messiah)
  • The descent of Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him)
  • The sun rising from the west
  • The emergence of the Beast of the Earth
  • The appearance of Ya’juj and Ma’juj (Gog and Magog)
  • Other extraordinary events preceding the Hour

These matters belong to the unseen and must be understood according to authentic revelation rather than speculation.

04

Protection from unseen trials

You risk neglecting specific means of protection taught by the Prophet ﷺ.

He instructed believers to seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of Hellfire, the punishment of the grave, the trials of life and death, and the evil of the trial of the Dajjal.

He also taught that memorizing the first ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf is a means of protection against the Dajjal.

These are not invented spiritual techniques or human speculation. They are teachings preserved through authentic Prophetic reports.

Why would we willingly disregard guidance that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave for our protection?

05

The Prophet’s explanation of the Qur’an

You risk losing an essential source for understanding what Allah revealed.

The Messenger ﷺ was not sent merely to recite revelation. Allah also entrusted him with explaining it to people. Allah says in Qur’an 16:44 ↗ that He revealed the Reminder to the Prophet ﷺ so that he would explain to people what had been revealed to them.

Authentic Hadith preserve many of his explanations, practical applications, judgments, and clarifications.

The Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah are not competing sources of guidance. The Sunnah explains, clarifies, and demonstrates how the revealed guidance is to be followed.

Rejecting authentic Prophetic explanations can therefore deprive a person of important guidance concerning the Qur’an itself.

06

Essential guidance for worship

You risk losing much of the detailed guidance needed to worship Allah according to the Prophet’s example.

Authentic Hadith preserve explanations concerning:

  • Salah (the prescribed ritual prayers)
  • Fasting and its rulings
  • Zakat (obligatory almsgiving)
  • Hajj (the pilgrimage to Makkah)
  • Purification and cleanliness
  • Other acts of worship and religious obligations

Muslims have also preserved worship through communal practice and teaching across generations. This is valuable, but inherited practice alone does not provide every explanation, clarification, or piece of evidence found in authentic Hadith.

The Prophet ﷺ demonstrated how Allah’s commands should be carried out. His guidance is essential for understanding not only the obligations of worship but also the recommended acts of Sunnah that bring additional reward and help believers follow his example more closely.

07

The grave and the Hereafter

You risk losing many important details intended to prepare believers for death and the life to come.

Authentic Hadith explain matters concerning the questioning in the grave, its trials, punishment and blessings, resurrection, accountability, and the realities of the Hereafter.

These teachings do not replace what the Qur’an reveals. They provide additional authentic details and explanations.

They remind us that worldly life is temporary, that our deeds have consequences, and that we will return to Allah for judgment.

Rejecting these reports risks depriving yourself of warnings and reminders that the Messenger ﷺ gave for the benefit of his community.

08

The path to Paradise

You risk missing guidance that Allah has made a means of attaining His pleasure, avoiding sin, and following the path to Paradise.

Authentic Hadith contain numerous warnings against destructive sins and encouragement toward righteous deeds. They teach believers the importance of sincerity, obedience, repentance, mercy, justice, and fulfilling the rights of others.

At the same time, the Prophet ﷺ made clear that no person enters Paradise through deeds alone, independently of Allah’s grace and mercy. Even the Messenger ﷺ affirmed his dependence upon Allah’s mercy.

Our righteous deeds are means through which we seek Allah’s pleasure and mercy, while our ultimate salvation remains dependent upon Him.

09

Forgiveness and repentance

You risk missing precious guidance on seeking Allah’s forgiveness.

The Prophet ﷺ taught his community how to turn to Allah through sincere repentance, supplication, remembrance, worship, and righteous deeds.

Authentic Hadith preserve teachings about actions that Allah has made means of forgiveness and immense reward. Some of these deeds may appear small to people, yet their rewards are great when performed sincerely and according to the guidance of Islam.

Why would we neglect authentic teachings that encourage us to repent, seek forgiveness, and return to Allah?

10

The Prophet’s supplications

You risk losing access to countless Prophetic du’as (supplications to Allah).

The Messenger ﷺ taught supplications for:

  • Seeking forgiveness and repentance
  • Protection from trials and evil
  • Hardship, distress, and illness
  • Gratitude for Allah’s blessings
  • Seeking Allah’s guidance
  • Morning and evening remembrance
  • Important situations throughout daily life

The Qur’an itself contains precious supplications, and Muslims can also call upon Allah with permissible words of their own. Yet authentic Hadith preserve many additional supplications specifically taught by the Messenger ﷺ.

These are valuable examples of how he turned to Allah in worship, gratitude, dependence, and hope.

11

Purification of the heart

You risk missing guidance that helps believers recognize and correct spiritual diseases.

Authentic Hadith warn against:

  • Hypocrisy, arrogance, and envy
  • Showing off in worship and insincerity
  • Pride and contempt for others
  • Injustice and harmful conduct

They also teach sincerity, humility, patience, gratitude, mercy, and remembrance of Allah.

Some spiritual dangers are difficult to recognize within ourselves. The Prophet’s ﷺ teachings help believers examine their intentions, correct their behavior, and seek purification of the heart through obedience to Allah.

12

The Prophet’s personal example

You risk losing countless details about the character of the Messenger whom Allah has made an excellent example for believers.

Allah says in Qur’an 33:21 ↗ that the Messenger of Allah is an excellent example for those whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and who remember Allah often.

Authentic Hadith preserve accounts of:

  • How he treated his family and his mercy toward children
  • His generosity, humility, and patience during hardship
  • His forgiveness, compassion, and concern for the vulnerable
  • His courage and commitment to justice
  • His conduct toward friends, opponents, and those who sought his guidance

These reports help us understand how he lived the teachings he conveyed. Without them, we lose access to many precious details of his conduct and character.

13

His guidance to the Companions

You risk losing invaluable lessons from those who personally accompanied the Messenger ﷺ.

Authentic Hadith preserve his answers to their questions, his corrections of their mistakes, and his advice concerning their faith and daily lives.

They show how he taught people with different levels of knowledge, addressed misunderstandings, and guided his community through real circumstances.

These reports are valuable because they demonstrate how Prophetic guidance was applied, explained, and understood. Not all of these teachings can be recovered from inherited rituals or general historical knowledge alone.

14

Sunnah versus inherited custom

Without Hadith, how can you reliably investigate whether a practice attributed to the Prophet ﷺ truly goes back to him?

Muslims have inherited many practices through families, communities, and generations of religious teaching. Some are established Sunnah. Others may be cultural customs, misunderstandings, or later additions.

Authentic Hadith provide crucial evidence for examining these claims. Scholars also consider other recognized forms of evidence, including established communal transmission and the broader principles of Islamic scholarship.

Rejecting all Hadith removes one of the most important means of distinguishing authentic Prophetic guidance from practices merely attributed to it.

15

The science of Hadith preservation

You risk dismissing centuries of extraordinary scholarship without examining its evidence.

Muslim Hadith scholars developed rigorous disciplines to investigate transmitted reports. They examined:

  • The identities and reliability of narrators
  • The precision of their memories and records
  • The continuity of chains of transmission
  • Whether narrators could have received reports from one another
  • Differences between independently transmitted narrations
  • Contradictions and hidden defects
  • Evidence of mistakes and fabrications

These scholars did not accept every narration simply because someone attributed it to the Prophet ﷺ. Their work was devoted to investigating whether reports could reliably be traced back to him.

They distinguished authentic, acceptable, weak, and fabricated narrations according to established scholarly methods.

Hadith scholarship is not based on the assumption that every transmitted report is true. Its purpose includes separating reliable evidence from unreliable claims.

To dismiss this entire tradition without seriously considering its methods and findings is to overlook an immense body of Islamic scholarship.

16

Learning from reliable transmission

You risk dismissing reliable reports merely because human beings transmitted them.

The Prophet’s ﷺ Companions witnessed his words and actions and conveyed what they learned to others. Later generations transmitted these reports through chains of narrators.

Hadith scholars investigated those chains, examined the reliability and precision of transmitters, and compared narrations to assess their authenticity.

Not every narrator was an eyewitness, and not every transmitted report was accepted.

Human transmission requires verification, not automatic acceptance or automatic rejection.

The fact that a teaching has been transmitted through people does not, by itself, make it unreliable. The proper response is to examine the evidence using sound scholarly principles.

17

Knowing the Messenger ﷺ

You risk closing the door to a priceless source of knowledge about the man Allah chose as His final Prophet.

Authentic Hadith preserve his teachings, decisions, advice, warnings, encouragement, compassion, and concern for his community.

They show how he called people to Allah, responded to questions, endured hardship, and guided others with wisdom. They provide reliable insight into his character and conduct without requiring speculation about his unexpressed thoughts or private intentions.

The Qur’an commands believers to follow the Messenger ﷺ. Authentic Hadith help us understand his example in greater detail.

How much precious guidance would we lose by refusing to examine what has reliably reached us from him?

A warning we cannot ignore

Obedience to the Messenger ﷺ is not optional.

Allah makes submission to the Messenger ﷺ a matter of profound religious importance. In Qur’an 4:65 ↗, Allah swears by Himself that people will not truly believe until they accept the Prophet ﷺ as judge in their disputes, find no inward resistance to his decisions, and submit completely.

“Find no resistance within themselves against your decision and submit wholeheartedly.”

Qur’an 4:65 · The Clear Quran, Dr. Mustafa Khattab

Rejecting an unverified, weak, or fabricated report is not the same as rejecting the Messenger ﷺ. Likewise, sincerely questioning whether an individual Hadith has been authentically transmitted is not automatically a rejection of his authority.

But rejecting every Hadith without examining its authenticity risks turning away from guidance he genuinely delivered. This distinction matters enormously.

No Hadith collection possesses the unique status of the Qur’an as Allah’s revealed Scripture. There is also a recognized category called Hadith Qudsi (sacred narrations), in which the Prophet ﷺ relates words attributed to Allah, distinct from the Qur’an.

Individual Hadith must be evaluated according to established scholarly principles. Yet the fact that reports were transmitted by human beings does not make authentic Prophetic guidance disposable.

The Qur’an commands obedience to the Messenger ﷺ. The authentic Sunnah preserves his binding teachings and his recommended example, both of which deserve respect and careful attention.

Accepting the authority of the Sunnah does not mean accepting every narration indiscriminately. It means recognizing the authority of what has been reliably established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

One final question.

What if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ warned you about a trial that could threaten your faith?

What if he taught a supplication through which you could seek Allah’s protection?

What if he explained a command of Allah that would help you worship correctly or avoid a serious sin?

What if he taught a righteous deed that Allah made a means of forgiveness, mercy, and immense reward?

What if those teachings had been faithfully preserved, carefully scrutinized, and transmitted through generations of scholars?

Would you really want to reject them without examining the evidence?

The Qur’an calls us to obey and follow the Messenger ﷺ. Authentic Hadith are among the essential sources through which his teachings, explanations, and example have been preserved.

We should neither accept every report without verification nor dismiss authentic Prophetic guidance without justification.

ﷺ

There is too much at stake in this life and the next to reject what has been reliably established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

May Allah protect us from rejecting the truth, grant us sincere love for His Messenger ﷺ, increase us in beneficial knowledge, and guide us to follow the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah with faith, sincerity, humility, and obedience.

Ameen.
